The cushion is the hardest-working part of your whole setup, and the first to wear out. Silicone gradually absorbs facial oils and hardens, losing the slight tackiness that lets it seal against your skin without pressure. Once that happens, the usual instinct is to tighten the headgear — which is what causes red marks and sore spots. Fitting a fresh cushion is the single most effective fix for a mask that used to seal and now leaks.
